Recently author, Brit Bennett facilitated a workshop here in Miami that I was able to attend. To say it was an intellectually stimulating three days, is an understatement. Her book, THE MOTHERS (Riverhead) was one of HuffPost’s 2016 Top Beach Reads! So, here we are in 2017 beach season, and I’m happy to have one signed copy to giveaway! We’re thrilled to share that SCANDAL actress, Kerry Washington has purchased the film rights to THE MOTHERS and plans to bring it to theatres. Of course, we can’t wait!
*****
In Brit Bennett’s novel, THE MOTHERS (Riverhead), at 17, Nadia Turner and Aubrey Evans worry about the usual teenage stuff: which Kanye West song to put on, which tight-fitting dress to wear out, which guys are worth their time, which childhood secrets are too taboo to reveal. Beneath the picture of cool youthfulness, each hides a secret, deep in her heart.
Nadia and Aubrey, two motherless girls living in a Southern California black community anchored by its Christian faith are at the heart of THE MOTHERS, which is narrated by a chorus of local church women. The Mothers shower praise on Aubrey, who throws herself into the community, committing to chastity promises and volunteering. But for Nadia, it’s much different when they learn, she has been sleeping with the pastor’s son.
THE MOTHERS follows Nadia and Aubrey through their years to womanhood. There’s a sense of loneliness and yearning for each as they navigate life, making choices and suffer the consequences of their decisions. Ultimately, THE MOTHERS is about love, giving and accepting.

Sounds like a good read! My Mum is from England and was always a bit different from my friend’s moms because of her upbringing. Now I am an adult and can see she always wanted the best for me..now if only my teen kids could see that about me lol!

My mother and I had a testy relationship. That being said, she taught me grace and composure. That I sometimes forget is on me, not her.

My mom work so hard to take care of her aging parents even though it drains on her when she’s working full-time. If I had half her devotion, I know I’ll be okay.

My Mom always wanted what was best for us. Sometimes, we didn’t always agree with her, but she was usually right in the end.

My mother is from England. She grew up in Boar’s Hill. She came to America when she was 12 years old. Before the move, it was just her and her mother most of the time. They walked frequently to the library and checked out many books. My love of reading came from her.

My mom said she couldn’t sing, so she read to us. She would buy 8 Little Golden books a month…it was $1 for 8…. because she got tired of reading them over and over. Apparently, when I was 4 I memorized one and was “reading” it to my younger sister. My mom thought I was really reading at first. She wanted us to love books…all 4 of us love to read.

My mother was a saint who raised 4 children with limited financial resources. We all turned out great thanks to her.

My Mom was the best. She raised 5 daughters and always put herself first. When people came to the house the first thing she did was feed them. She made a shower umbrella for my bridal shower. I kept it and plan to give it to my daughter at her bridal shower because my Mom always called my daughter her Angel.

My mom was an amazing woman. She loved each one of us kids for who we were. She was always there to help with whatever we needed. She was also the most crafty person I think I’ve ever met. There was nothing she couldn’t do if she put her mind to it.
