When I first saw the cover of Laura Dave’s new novel, HELLO, SUNSHINE (SimonandSchuster), the music band, Katrina and the Waves summer hit song, “I’m Walking on Sunshine” starting playing in my head. Then I started reading HELLO, SUNSHINE and realized it’s not just chick-lit summer fare. It’s an important book, especially in this climate when some people have no problem blurring the lines between telling the truth and telling lies.
Sunshine Mackenzie has it all! She’s a successful lifestyle guru loved by millions with a top cooking show on YouTube and millions of fans all trying to be Sunshine! She’s close to sealing a deal with the Food Network for a new show. Her cookbooks top the New York Times Bestsellers list and her husband, Danny is delish – she’s absolutely perfect! Or is she?
A tweet pops up on her smart phone screen. She’s been hacked. “Do you know who this is? Here’s a hint: I’m about to ruin you.”
It comes to light, that Sunshine Mackenzie has been hiding a secret and living a lie. Once it hits social media, her perfectly created existence implode! So long yummy hubby, Danny. Wave good-bye to YouTube show and any plans of showing up on the Food Network. The money stops flowing into her accounts and all of her once adoring fans are nowhere to be seen.
It’s time for Sunshine to cook up some humble pie … and take a big bite!
HELLO, SUNSHINE is about secrets, especially the secrets we keep from ourselves. It takes a lot to make one a brand in these modern times, but success can be so easily lost when it’s built on lies. Left with no career, money, Sunshine is able to get her sister to let her sleep on her couch – even though she’s been a really lousy sister.
Let’s face it, everyone loves reading stories about redemption and HELLO, SUNSHINE is one of those reads. Of course we’re going to forgive her, but now it’s her turn to do the right thing and learn some lessons from the ground up – maybe some of us will take away lesson or two, as well. As they say, karma can be a bitch!

This sounds like a great read. I’m working through some books I’ve had on the reserve list at the library for awhile: Fall by Sara Paretsky; You’ll Never Know, Dear by Hallie Ephron; The Switch by Joseph Finder, and more. Also have ARCs of The Map That Leads to You and The Best of Adam Sharp that I’m looking forward to. Just finished The Breakdown – marvelous.
