GOODNIGHT FROM LONDON by Jennifer Robson & GIVEAWAY

BookSparks’ Summer Reading Challenge continues with Jennifer Robson’s new historical fiction treat, GOODNIGHT FROM LONDON (WilliamMorrow). It’s the latest book from one of our favorite authors, who takes us back in history to a heartfelt story during World War II.

It’s 1940, when twenty-four year-old, American journalist, Ruby Sutter gets the chance of a lifetime. The young journalist is offered the opportunity to move from New York to London as a staff writer for “Picture Weekly” newsmagazine. In London, no one will know anything about her humble upbringing and she’ll be able to create a complete new life. But not everyone in London rolls out the welcome mat for the young American woman journalist.

But just as she’s starting to feel situated, The Blitz is on and the bombs start dropping.  As the horror stretches from one week into months, Ruby tries to remain a neutral. Like many others, she loses everything and has to rely on the generosity of people she doesn’t know to survive. It’s at that point she learns that a man she’s had a close friendship with may not really be who he seems. Will his secrets keep them apart?

At the end of GOODNIGHT FROM LONDON, Robson provides of glossary of terms to help readers with words they be unfamiliar with in the story. There are many WWII terms I found baffling and had to look up. I found the glossary a wonderful addition. Robson also provides additional material for anyone who might like to read more about women’s experiences during WWII, particularly women journalists.

Jennifer’s own words:

An academic by background, a former editor by profession, and a lifelong history geek, I am lucky enough to now call myself a full-time writer. I’m the author of three novels set during and after the First World War: Somewhere in France, After the War is Over, and Moonlight Over Paris, and a contributor to the anthology Fall of Poppies: Stories of Love and the Great War. My next novel, Goodnight from London, will be published in the spring of 2017.

I first learned about the Great War from my father, acclaimed historian Stuart Robson, and later served as an official guide at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial at Vimy Ridge, France. I studied French literature and modern history as an undergraduate at King’s University College at Western University, then attended Saint Antony’s College at the University of Oxford, where I obtained my doctorate in British economic and social history. While at Oxford I was a Commonwealth Scholar and SSHRC Doctoral Fellow.

For a number of years I worked as an editor but am now fortunate enough to consider myself a full-time writer. I am represented by Kevan Lyon of the Marsal Lyon Agency.

I live in Toronto, Canada, with my husband and young children, and share my home office with Ellie the sheepdog, Mika the kitten, and Sam the cat.
