(Summary provided by Lake Union Publishing)

In Judy Fogarty’s, BREAKING AND HOLDING (Lake Union Publishing), the year of 1978 is significant for the main character at the start of the novel and throughout. Patricia Curren, makes a devastating discovery that changes the course of her marriage. She finds an unfamiliar black pearl button in the bed she shares with her controlling husband, Jack. It gives her the courage to tell her husband she wishes to spend the summer alone at their beach house on beautiful Kiawah Island. But when she meets Terry Sloan, a hot tennis player trying to go pro, their attraction grows into an obsession.

Once Patricia and Terry begin sharing closely guarded secrets from their pasts, they want more than a summer together. But they soon realize their love can’t sustain when a sponsor comes between them taking an intense interest in Terry, on and off the court. And when that single, career-driven Lynn Hewitt arrives, other secrets surface, including ones Patricia has been keeping from him all summer long.

(My Take)

I enjoyed reading BREAKING AND HOLDING for the love story. It was intense, romantic and compelling, but I found myself more interested in the time frame it took place. From a women’s perspective, the 1970s were a very tumultuous time, a time of introspection and growth.

I was very young then, but I remember it was an era when women were actively entering the work force. No longer content to just stay at home with children or be housewives, women sought more fulfilling accomplishments. And in the case of the character in BREAKING AND HOLDING, Patricia  feels the need to continue her education at NYU and complete her aborted PhD dissertation. Her husband had always told her there was no need for that, but she could no longer be untrue to herself.

That was the case with my own mother, who left her marriage and our family. Perhaps I’m entering TMI territory, but that’s what happens when you read fiction. There are times you connect, and this time I did quite closely.

Some might read BREAKING AND HOLDING and take away a love story, or a tennis story or a … whatever story. I took away a story of a young woman breaking free, finding her unique spirit and ultimately her truth. We should all be so blessed.

  1. I am currently reading Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance. The story hits home for me for several reasons. The first is that it takes place very close to the town I reside in. The second it addresses current issues that are relevant to where I live. It is a memoir about a family and a culture in crisis.

  6. Currently reading Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald. It’s a wonderful story about an Iranian girl that comes to the US in hopes of a better life and opportunity. And the place she goes to is Tucson, which is where I live, so it’s fun to read about local settings.

  8. I’m currently reading The Fifth Petal by Brunonia Barry and Condemn Me Not by Heather B. Moore. I really enjoyed The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry and The Fifth Petal is the second book in that series. I’m only about 10% into Condemn Me Not but I’m liking it so far. Both books are set in Salem–one is actually during the witch trials and the other is set in present day but references the witch trials.
