FLYING ALONE: A Memoir by Beth Ruggiero York takes readers thousands of miles up into the friendly skies for a ride they won’t soon forget.

At thirteen years old, Elizabeth Ruggiero’s heart was broken when her father died suddenly. But there was a bigger challenge ahead when doctors told her she probably had multiple sclerosis at 22 years old. Elizabeth vowed that this new challenge would not put restrictions on her life and embarked on a lifelong dream to fly for the airlines.

Starting at a small local airport, the aviation world swallowed her whole, and the next five years of her life were as turbulent as an airplane in a thunderstorm, never knowing when, how or if she would emerge.

An agonizing love affair with her flight instructor, dangerous risks in the sky and flying broken airplanes for shady companies all intertwined to define her road to the airlines.

“TransWorld Airlines assigned me to a Boeing 727 training class in St. Louis starting on September 24, 1989. After seven weeks of intense training, I qualified for the Flight Engineer – Turbojet Powered certificate and began my new job at Flight Engineer, or Second Officer, in the cockpit of the 727. I Had made it to the majors.”

FLYING ALONE is told with soul-baring candor, taking readers on a suspenseful journey through the terror, romance and ultimate victory of those years.

FLYING ALONE will be published tomorrow.

  1. I have no desire to fly an airplane but I do love flying and do so for business trips and vacation

  2. I have never been on a plane but I have always wanted to ride in one. As a pilot that is a very big responsibility and takes a lot of commitment and training to fly one. As a passenger I think I would be very nervous my first time I honestly can’t say how I would react. 😂😂
Thanks for such a fabulous giveaway

  3. I’m really not a fan of flying. I would never want to pilot a plane and I’m not a comfortable passenger. I do fly about 4 times per year out of necessity.

  4. I cannot imagine flying a plane. My daughter had a 16 year old boyfriend who got a pilots license years ago and I remember them flying over my house. What was I thinking???

  5. I’ve never wanted to pilot a plane but as a passenger, the thrill from the engines revving up for take off gets me every time!

  6. I don’t think I’d want to be the pilot, and I’ve only flown twice. The first time I felt sick, the second time I took Dramamine and was fine.

  8. This sounds like a very good read, I enjoyed reading the book review and the author interview. I think flying as a passenger is very nice, especially if you are going to go visit someone because flying gets you there faster and you can spend more time with the persons you are visiting. Flying is Great , I would not like to fly an airplane myself, but I have a lot of respect for pilots. Thank God for pilots.

  10. I love flying and often thought I’d love to learn to actually pilot a plane, but I have very poor eyesight and a negative sense of direction…so, no, Virginia, we cannot grow up to be whatever we want…lol.. I am very happy for the author though. Excellent review.

  11. I am a nervous traveler, but more afraid of missing flights than anything happening during the flight. Always happy to go on vacation!

  12. I love to fly, as a passenger. Once upon a time, I wanted to learn to fly, but lessons were too expensive. Now, I don’t think my eyesight is good enough to pilot a plane.

  13. Flying has always been a little scary for me, especially the time we flew through a thunderstorm.
