Another creepy mystery book to ease us into Halloween. Neil Olson’s BEFORE THE DEVIL FELL (Harlequin/Hanover) is suspenseful with just enough ickiness to make it really good.

Will Connor returns to his hometown, a village north of Boston, to care for his injured mother. He’s kept his distance from the town since high school, but once home he finds himself reexamining a horrific incident that took place during one of his mother’s “spirit circles.” His mother had embraced the hippie generation’s fascination with New Age and the arcane, but the unexpected death of a close friend put an end to the meetings of the modern-day coven.

Or did it?

As Will looks deeper into his family’s history he discovers that her practices weren’t so much a passing fad but the latest link in a long tradition of New England witchcraft, which still seems to hold a strange power over the town. Will hopes that unearthing the facts about the death will put his questions to rest, but there are those willing to resort to violence to keep those secrets buried.

You’ll just have to find out.

  1. I haven’t dressed up in years but when I was a teacher I wore the same costume every year. A headband with mouse ears and a mouse tail that went around my waist. I wore these with a grey sweatsuit and I had a cute comfy costume!

  2. I am going to be handing out candy Halloween but not wearing a costume. I have Stage 4 Lung Cancer and I am currently undergoing aggressive Chemo treatments so I am so weak and fighting side effects to the point I don’t feel like dressing up. This book looks great. Thank you for the chance 💞

  3. No costume for me…just home reading! I don’t hand out candy anymore because I don’t feel the safest in the area that I live in even though it’s right in town. I live alone and you can’t be too careful these days. I had an incident happened years ago that unnerved me so now I just stay in with my fur kids and read 😀

  6. I’m going to dress up as a mom who gives out candy to kids in costume. I have a great Halloween sweatshirt with candy corn and other goodies on it. It says Trick or Treat. It always gets a great response.
