BookSparks’ Summer Reading Challenge 2017 is winding down … and it’s almost time to start our senior year in BookSparks’ Fall Reading Challenge 2017! But before we put away our beach bags and flip-flops, let’s check out another compelling novel – you’ll want to read!

My first trip to Hawaii was in 1990 and I’ve been blessed to have returned several times. In fact, we’re celebrating my husband’s special birthday this December in Hawaii. Imagine my excitement when I got to read, Swan Huntley’s, novel THE GODDESSES (Doubleday) set in Hawaii. I could picture the sunsets and almost taste a frozen Mai Tai.

In THE GODDESSES (Doubleday), Nancy, her husband, Chuck and their twin teenage sons, Jed and Cam arrive in luscious Kona, Hawaii hoping for a fresh start. Nancy’s husband cheated on her and they’re hoping to put all of that behind them, now that they’re living in paradise.

But once there, Nancy realizes wherever you go, there you are and a geographic change isn’t going to cut it. She knows she has to do something ASAP. She reads about a yoga class, and soon she’s on the beach at 7am, with her mat. There she meets Ana, pronounced On-a. She’s immediately drawn to the truly alive cheerful, positive woman with a chunk of neon pink within her short black hair. Her warm eyes and deep wisdom, resonate with Nancy and soon they’re BFFs, spending nearly all their time together. But even bad things can happen in the idyllic tropical Hawaiian Islands.

Swan Huntley weaves a dark psychological thriller in juxtaposition to the beauty of Hawaii. She explores how manipulation can affect friendships and people to the point of not recognizing who themselves. The characters of Nancy and Ana are written so well, I felt as if I was driving around the Island with them. After reading THE GODDESSES, you’ll be thinking twice, the next time you want to befriend someone … someone too fabulous for words!

Now I have to go read Swan Huntley’s debut  novel, WE COULD BE BEAUTIFUL.

  1. Loved Hawaii when I went years ago. I loved climbing Diamond Head (not) and would never have able to do it now w/my bad knees and back. We stayed at a private home used for a B&B and loved having our own private pool.

  2. I LOVE Hawaii!!!! I used to go all the time when I was with my ex. We used to talk about moving there. He moved to Honolulu after we got divorced. But we remained friends. So for my 40th (a long time ago) birthday, he paid for a trip for me to come visit him. He put me in a hotel overlooking Waikiki Beach and he took the week off work and took me around the island showing me all of the places he discovered while he had been living there. It was my most memorable trip ever. I dream of returning one day, but we don’t have the funds for a vacation (not even a driving vacation). So, I get my fill of beachy love through books now.

  4. How true, wherever you go, there you are. Going somewhere else doesn’t always fix things. I thought I didn’t ever want to visit Hawaii but realized that was because my sister told me it was nothing but humidity and tourists. She was on a trip with her soon-to-be ex-husband meeting in-laws who didn’t like her, so go figure. Not sure if I’ll ever make it there, but I’ve since heard all the beautiful things about it from a friend who visits every year.

  5. I stayed with a friend for two weeks in Maui. It was so beautiful and clean looking. Sparkling water, blue skies on one side of island, lots of rain on the other side of island. We saw Haleakalā. We arrived so early in the morning to watch the sun rise. The ground was like the way you would see it on a moon. I hiked the Ioa Needle. It was awesome.

  6. I’ve never been; my son and daughter-in-law went in February (I got to house and dog sit!) He wants to move there! I just imagine the flowers first. Not much of a beach person but would love to see them just once!

  7. This book sounds great. Never been to Hawaii and never sure I’ll be able to go there. I’ve been to Sanibel Island, Fla a couple of times in the month of May however. It’s such a beautiful place and in my mind I pretend it’s my Hawaii.

  8. I have never been to HI but I would love to go. I bet the beaches there are amazing. As well as the hiking. From what I have seen of the state, it’s very rich in culture. I hope I get to experience it one day.

  9. My dad was stationed there when I was little. Went to kindergarten there. I remember the beach and we had a hibiscus hedge around our house that smelled amazing and a banana tree in the yard.

  10. I have traveled a good bit, but nothing west of California and Alaska. Hawaii has been my dream vacation. I have a frequent flyer credit card just so we can go to Hawaii. I think I would love the food, the flowers, the people, and the beaches.

  11. Oh! I would love to see Hawaii! I can just picture the clear blue water, and the soft white sand. I bet on a clear sunny day it would be hard to say which is bluer, the sky or the water. You can probably see the mountains in the distance, majestic & intimidating at the same time. In my mind the locals are really friendly, and love to tell you all about Hawaii’s traditions and culture. At night, I’m guessing while you are at the luau watching the hula girls dance, you can smell the savory pork mixing with the juicy pineapples while they are cooking on the spot! Am I close Cindy?

    1. You can smell pineapple in a lot of places – and they put it in EVERYTHING. MAI TAIs…… FYI: I visited a pineapple plantation and that was cool!

  14. I’d love to read Swan Huntley’s latest. I own her first book, We Could Be Beautiful. Well, I’ve never taken a trip to Hawaii and I honestly don’t know why. Maybe because of all the lizards? I’ve seen enough photos and movies to know it’s lush, serene, beautiful and green. : )

  15. I’ve been to HI one time. Visited Honolulu a couple of days and spent the rest of my time on Oahu. I love that small island where you can see everything. Would love to go again.

  16. What I like about Hawaii is their women’s dresses. I have always dreamed about getting another one. I had one as a little girl and the dress material was like silk. I am sure there are other great things about Hawaii but for me shopping is key.
