THE BREAKDOWN

BREAKS OUT TODAY!

The novel so many of us have been waiting for is here – B.A. Paris’ THE BREAKDOWN (St.Martin’sPress) arrives in bookstores and on-line today. It’s her follow-up to the huge hit, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

And Guess what? We have two signed novels and bags to giveaway to TWO lucky winners!

Cass Anderson is only a year into her marriage to Matthew, and she couldn’t be happier. She can’t believe her luck at snagging him, because he’s so gorgeous! First mistake: never marry anyone better looking than you. Believe me or not, problems always follow!

Cass has a drink with friends and has to drive home during an awful thunderstorm. Before leaving, she calls Matthew who tells her he has a migraine and in no uncertain terms, should she take the shortcut through the backwoods road home. So what does Cass do? Of course, she takes the shortcut home and along the way she sees a woman sitting in a car alone. The storm is at its peak and Cass wonders if the woman needs help. What should she do? She gives the woman enough time to either honk for help or flash her lights and she does neither, so Cass continues on her trip home.

The next day, it’s reported there’s been a murder. Soon Cass learns the woman she saw in her car, in the backwoods, in the middle of the storm, is the one who was brutally killed the night before and she didn’t stop! Cass is not only shocked, but she overcome by paranoia and guilt. It doesn’t help that her mom was diagnosed and died of early onset dementia only months prior. She decides to keep the fact she saw the woman to herself out of shame for not stopping.

Then the daily phone calls start with no one on the other end. She starts seeing and sensing things that can’t be explained. She calls the police to her home on goose chases. Soon she’s labeled “hysterical.” Her doctor prescribes pills that zone her out.

Things are moving along steady, if not redundantly in THE BREAKDOWN, until the last fifty or so pages. B.A. Paris packs a lot of story in the back half and most of it’s delivered in dialogue, slowing down the climax and limiting the action. I enjoyed THE BREAKDOWN, but it leaves an open ending, which I didn’t find up to par with BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

B.A. PARIS grew up in England but has spent most of her adult life in France. She has worked both in finance and as a teacher and has five daughters. The bestselling thriller, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS was her first novel.

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press, we have two signed  novels and THE BREAKDOWN bags to giveaway.

It’s hard to imagine anyone who hasn’t read BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. For a chance to win one of our giveaways, just tell us who you’d cast for the roles of Jack and Grace in the movie version of BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

We’ll announce winners next week. Good luck!

  1. I think Brad Pitt would be great as Jack and Nicole Kidman as Grace. Would be thrilled to win this. Behind Closed Doors was my very favorite book last year! 🙂

  2. I see Nicholas Cage as Jack and Elisabeth Shue as Grace. They have chemistry together and could each play these pivotal parts. Age might be a problem though. In which case, Jennifer Lawrence and just about anybody.

  3. I haven’t read Behind Closed Doors. I need to get this book. Without knowing the characters, it would be hard for me to choose the actors. For good looks only and acting skills, Jude Law and Kate Winslet.

  4. Nicole Kidman as Grace. Not sure about Jack…Brad Pitt would be good, but he probably wouldn’t do it. This duo would make a top hit, I think.

  5. I’ve only read a little excerpt of the book and I’m thinking either Tom Hiddleston or Christian Bale as Jack and Emilia Clarke as Grace.
