WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT by Jennifer Romolini & GIVEAWAY

weird

I’m always a bit leery when a new book comes out telling women how to get the job she wants and basically take over the world!

Who can forget our favorite #NastyGirl, Sophia Amoruso? She wore a black bob that rivaled Anna Wintour, sans sunglasses. Her eyes drove deep into your soul and you listened. She was the author and founder of Nasty Girl, a sassy and irreverent company that became the darling of Wall Street, at one time worth $200 million dollars – until Nasty Sophia filed for bankruptcy and the company was sold for just $20 mil. I’ve read a lot of these books, seen the experts come and go. Fly up the bestseller list and then crash. I’m sure you have too.

Say hello to Jennifer Romolini and her book, WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT (HARPERBusiness).  The title alone kind of speaks to me, but I had to dig deeper. Jennifer went from being a broke, divorced, college dropout to running some of the biggest websites in the world, including “HelloGiggles” of Zooey Deschanel fame. And who doesn’t love Zooey? Now Jennifer is chief content officer at ShondaLand.com. You know, THAT Shonda who created SCANDAL and half of ABC and NBC’s primetime line-up.

Jennifer began her career like a lot of us, an awkward twenty-something misfit, fresh out of college. She navigated her way through the shark-infested New York media and became a boss – an editor-in-chief, an editorial director, and a vice president – all within little more than a decade. WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT argues being outside-the-norm is actually an advantage. Jennifer writes its possible to achieve success without just succeeding at office politics, or ___-kissing, as some of us call it. That isn’t the direct path to the corner office, or central pod, or whatever.

WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT reads as if you’re chatting with you new BFF. I suggest serving up a bottle of chilled sauvignon blanc and delving in. Even if you’re not looking for a job, or wanting to change careers, there are tips in WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT that anyone can use.

  • How do I navigate the awkwardness of networking?
  • How do I deal with intense office politics?
  • How do I leave my crappy job?
  • How do I learn how to be a boss not just a #boss?
  • And, most importantly: How do I do all this and stay true to who I really am?

I see how WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT can be used when navigating the world of friendships – making and keeping. I plan on getting copies for my “weirder” friends.

  1. Working as a bank teller who substitutes while other tellers (at various branches) were on vacation…I didn’t have a car at the time and had to figure out the bus line to each bank daily in a large city….one day I got lost…and a tow truck driver brought me to work in a flat bed tow truck. Each day was an adventure!

  2. Hmm, weird job? I lasted one day at a call center. We were trying to sell season tickets to the Alley Theater in Houston. We sat in a windowless room, everyone but me was chain smoking. I almost asphyxiated that day. I went home smelling like an ashtray. I didn’t sell anything and didn’t care!

  3. I worked in film production, and some odd stuff can happen on a show. We were on location, and heard about an area women who was a psychic. (Part of our storyline also involved a psychic, so we were intrigued.) A few of us decided to stop by and see her, on our way back to the office. We arrived to her place, and out of the woods (as if on cue), a hoard of cats came out of the woods right when we knocked at the door. She answered and said, “I’m with someone, you’ll have to come back.” We never did- lol 🙂

  4. I’ve never had a weird job, really. My most unusual job was calling to raise money for the college where I worked. Every time we got a donation, we had to ring a bell and everyone would cheer. It paid minimum wage but the boss gave us Little Debbie snack cakes during break….made it worth it for a poor college kid!

  5. Sitting at a computer all day which was exhausting. Correcting essays and not permitted to go to quickly which was impossible for me.

  6. My weirdest job was in a medical lab and I had to draw blood on boxing men in Portland Oregon. They were really nice guys but rather intimidating!!
