I’m always a bit leery when a new book comes out telling women how to get the job she wants and basically take over the world!

Who can forget our favorite #NastyGirl, Sophia Amoruso? She wore a black bob that rivaled Anna Wintour, sans sunglasses. Her eyes drove deep into your soul and you listened. I’ve read a lot of these books, seen the experts come and go. Fly up the bestseller list and then crash. I’m sure you have too.

Say hello to Jennifer Romolini and her book, WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT (HARPERBusiness).  The title alone kind of speaks to me, but I had to dig deeper. Jennifer went from being a broke, divorced, college dropout to running some of the biggest websites in the world, including “HelloGiggles” of Zooey Deschanel fame. And who doesn’t love Zooey? Now Jennifer is chief content officer at ShondaLand.com. You know, THAT Shonda who created SCANDAL and half of ABC and NBC’s primetime line-up.

Jennifer began her career like a lot of us, an awkward twenty-something misfit, fresh out of college. She navigated her way through the shark-infested New York media and became a boss – an editor-in-chief, an editorial director, and a vice president – all within little more than a decade. WEIRD in a WORLD THAT’S NOT argues being outside-the-norm is actually an advantage. Jennifer writes its possible to achieve success without just succeeding at office politics, or ___-kissing, as some of us call it. That isn’t the direct path to the corner office, or central pod, or whatever.
