I loved reading Taylor Jenkins Reid’s four previous novels, and I was equally under her spell while reading her new book, THE SEVEN HUSBANDS of EVELYN HUGO (Atria). What I enjoyed most? Reid has taken a different direction in her storytelling, setting the core of it in the Golden Age of Hollywood. The details of the narrative will have you wondering why haven’t I heard of this movie star, Evelyn Hugo before? Certainly, I’ve seen at least one of her films during AMC Oscar month? That is, until you realize, Evelyn Hugo is the creation of Taylor Jenkins Reid.
THE SEVEN HUSBANDS of EVELYN HUGO is the story of the daughter of Cuban immigrants who grew up in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC with a singular plan and dream – to get the hell out of Hell’s Kitchen and to become the world’s biggest movie star. Readers follow Evelyn’s ruthless rise to the top and get a front row seat watching her rise and the sacrifices she makes along the way.
The story begins present day, when Evelyn, 79 is about to auction off a dozen of her infamous gowns and summons a young journalist to do the story. The reporter is as green as an Irish meadow, but if Vivant magazine doesn’t send Monique Grant to do the job, the story is dead. They meet in Evelyn’s penthouse off Fifth Avenue. She walks up to Monique in black stretch pants showcasing her perfect figure, in a long gray-navy sweater with charisma and charm “that inspires devotion.” Monique quickly learns Evelyn is straight forward and plans on holding nothing back. She starts at the beginning. Evelyn knew her only currency in Hollywood was her chest and she used it like money. Over the years, through the scandals and marriages Evelyn tells Monique the one secret everyone wants to know – who her one true love was.
As Evelyn’s story moves toward present day it becomes clear their lives are going to intersect in some way. Reid proceeds to drop subtle hints and eventually at the point of the reveal, both women struggle with what it means to face the truth. It’s interesting to see how these women, different in so many ways, are strikingly similar, particularly in their personal ambitions.I suggest lounging poolside while reading THE SEVEN HUSBANDS of EVELYN HUGO, with a delicious chilled martini. I’m not big on dirty ones, but I do love the pretty green apple martinis with a big bright red cherries!
