WOMAN NO. 17 by Edan Lepucki & GIVEAWAY

***GIVEAWAY CLOSED***

woman 17

Bestselling author, Edan Lepucki’s new novel, WOMAN NO. 17 (Hogarth) takes places in Los Angeles, where it could only be set. Lepucki knows how to zero in on what makes southern California unique and is able to capitalize on every nuance in the land of make believe, providing entertainment for readers not found anywhere else.

High, oh so high, up in the Hollywood Hills, writer Lady Daniels, whose real name is Pearl but that doesn’t concern us, has decided to take a break from her husband, Karl, who will soon come to seem like the most normal person in this novel, full of mostly eccentric characters. But trust me, that is not a bad thing. Lady proceeds to find and hire “S”, whose name is most certainly not S, off Craigslist to care for her two sons from two marriages. Devin is two, soon to be three, Seth is eighteen and may or may not be on the spectrum, but either way he doesn’t talk. Lady needs time for herself, so she can write her memoir and she’s currently suffering from writer’s block. And still, more characters make their entrance adding to the menagerie.

So S arrives and settles into the guest house and slowly life begins to change; not right away, but little but little. S starts drawing everyone into her orbit, and becomes Lady’s confidante. Secrets start coming out of the dark, woodwork, closet and finding their way into the light of day. The glue that Lady used to keep her family together starts weakening. We find out why S really took the job. It’s a classic tale of people behaving very badly. But ooh, it’s so much fun!

  1. i lived in LA for a brief time. LA is like a permanent vacation with it’s beautiful weather. This books sounds like a delicious romp.

  2. I’ve been so curious about this book and eyeing it. Now you’ve convinced me I must read it! Well, considering I live in SoCal, I do like LA. However, the one think I can’t stand is the traffic. It’s seriously 24/7 and it will never change; it’ll just get worse.

  3. I don’t like the freeway! Bumper to bumper. Also, in places I’ve been to, it’s very crowded. It used to be smoggy. I don’t know about now.

  4. Hate is probably strong (except when it’s SF Giants vs LA Dodgers of course), but since I’ve never lived there and only done the touristy stuff it never seems normal. Which makes this book sound like a really great read.
