In Suzanne Redfearn’s, novel, NO ORDINARY LIFE, (Grand Central Publishing), Faye Martin is doing her best to keep a roof over the heads of her three children, 4 year-old, Molly, 8 year-old, Tom and 12 year-old Emily in Yucaipa, California. Husband and dad, Sean hasn’t been seen or sent money back in months. He’s supposedly working out on the road in his truck, but more than likely, he’s shacked up with one of his girlfriends. Faye is struggling to make ends meet, but she’s on the verge of a melt-down, so Faye makes a decision she hoped against. She calls her mother and asks if they can stay with her in LA.

After listening to a lecture from her mother about what a loser her husband, Sean is, Faye decides she needs to get a job as soon as possible. She takes the kids out to the Santa Monica promenade and while she’s filling out job applications, Molly is taped performing with a street dancer! The video ends up on YouTube – over 7-million hits later – Molly is offered a GAP commercial, and the starring role in a hit television show. The Martin’s prayers have been answered, or have they?

NO ORDINARY LIFE is a compelling story about a young mother’s relentless fight to protect her children from the dangerous world of Hollywood. When the reality of their new life settles in, Faye realizes that fame and fortune don’t come without a price.

I couldn’t put NO ORDINARY LIFE down, the pacing was great, but Faye often annoyed me. She let herself be bullied and then she would act out in passive aggressive ways. The flirting and power plays with men on the set also came with a price, which seemed to surprise her. In Hollywood? This was curious to me. I know Faye was new to the business and the way the town worked, but she needed to reach out to someone to trust, be it an accountant, lawyer someone not in the circle of the show. The idea of Faye sabotaging the entire show and every employee’s livelihood, for her kid’s sake, was not only naïve, but one might argue, well, let’s just say a no, no. But then again, perhaps, she’d become what she despised.

Good news: NO ORDINARY LIFE hits TARGET stores this Sunday in Target’s Emerging Author Sections. I look forward to reading what Suzanne Redfearn writes next.
