“For God’s sake, woman, don’t you have anything better to do with your time than read?”
THE READERS of BROKEN WHEEL RECOMMEND (Sourcebooks) by Katarina Bivald is unlike any book I’ve read in a long time. It’s kind of like, but now quite a bit of a fairytale, sort of. It reminded me of reading a Fannie Flagg or perhaps an Annie Proulx novel – talk about range, huh?
Sara travels from Sweden to Broken Wheel, Iowa after corresponding through letters for two years with Amy Harris. Unfortunately, when Sara finally arrives to meet Amy, she has passed away, but the people in town know how special Sara was to Amy. They take Sara under their wing and in their very limited way, try to be hospitable in this most inhospitable of towns. Broken Wheel is basically broken, has nothing going for it, is the joke of Iowa, even the townsfolk are embarrassed to be stuck there. There’s basically one bar, church, dress shop and mini-grocer, and most people are leaving, not staying.
The town is full of quirky characters that Sara’s arrival begins to bring together. Most have stayed to themselves, but now everyone wants to meet “Amy’s Tourist” and the unique wackiness and humor of Broken Wheel begins to surface.
Sara and Amy found wholeness in their shared love of books in their letters, so Sara decides to open a Bookstore in Broken Wheel despite everyone’s protests. But it sometimes takes an outsider to help people take a fresh look at the possibilities of what they have right in front of them. While helping the towns people of Broken Wheel, Sara in turns heals herself.
Katarina Bivald has written one of those lovely stories that will stay with you long after you’ve read the last page. THE READERS of BROKEN WHEEL RECOMMEND is a book readers will delight in on many levels. It’s the perfect book to cozy up with, especially now in the winter. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Bivald.
