“I realized that, despite my historically cowardly constitution, I didn’t feel terribly frightened at the moment. I wouldn’t have thought I could push on, but, hey, I’ve already done too much work on this story – no way was I going to back off now.”
In Ellen Sherman’s novel, JUST THE FACTS (SheWritesPress), Nora Plowright gets her first newspaper reporter job at the Annapolis Evening Courier. It’s the 70’s, she drives a ’71 Chevy Caprice, loves collecting poet’s quotes and drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee.
She’s catching stories to write that appear far off page one like “the banning of potato chips from school lunches,” “shootings at 7-11s,” and “firefighters rescuing children.” Editors appreciate how she gives an extra effort and the human angle, they say she writes like a novelist, but still want more.
The biggest story in town is the new highway being built and five plans are up for approval, or are they? Has one already been chosen in a backroom deal? One night Nora gets an anonymous call, which has her chasing the story of her career, before her career has even started. It’s about selecting roads before environmental studies wrap up, possible contaminated run-off water, disrupted wetlands, potters fields and toxic landfills. It’s the jackpot for a real hungry reporter! Her bosses talk about a three-part series – even a possible Pulitzer Prize.
But Nora’s the kind of gal that likes things nice and easy, not complicated and this story quickly gets very complicated and dangerous. She’s forced to grow up fast, face the real world. Nora has to see if she’s got what it takes to stand up against bullies and be a professional.
